Current Goings-On

I know it’s been some time since my last post. I’ve been so very busy lately! I’ve hardly had time to do normal everyday things, much less any of the arts I enjoy. I have been teaching our daughters for summer school and we are really enjoying our study of the history and geography of Japan.  We’re also continuing our science studies in physics and having fun with many science projects. In our study of Japan, we’ve studied some of the arts practiced in that country:

Zen Painting on fan shapes - The one on the left was done by Magiba, and the one on the right, by Starshine.

These are our attempts at Ikebana, the Japanese art of flower arranging. It really isn't that easy!

Moku Hanga is the art of woodblock printing. We created ours using an idea shared by Consie Sindet. She blogs at www.atopserenityhill.com so I hope you'll stop in at her blog. She's a wonderful artist!

We also studied a bit about hiragana.

These are the worksheets we used to work on our hiragana skills.

The above photos were taken by me and edited in either Pixlr or Instagram. They are not for sale and you do not have my permission to use them in any way.

I have been working on little art projects here and there when I can but time is scarce. The storm season is upon us and we’ve been out storm spotting quite a bit. This in itself could produce some interesting paintings, if I didn’t mind the havoc it would reap in my spirit. I’ve got two current projects to share with you. One is a work-in-progress and the other is a collaboration with Magiba. I hope you enjoy them!

This is a simple line drawing base that I plan to paint and add a poem or lyric to. If you'd like to download a copy, you can do so by clicking the link to go to my deviantArt page. It's free but if you use it for any projects of your own, please link back to my deviantArt page, and give me credit in the caption. Thanks!

Gilded Blessings

I’ve been fighting a nasty cold all week. I’m only just getting my voice back after 4 days without it. I sound like a squeaky hinge. But I have been working on more art and this is my latest. It took a total of two days work. It’s done in layers and the first layer had to dry before I could finish it with the details.

Peacock Dreams, Martian Scenes, And The Teapot Drips

Today’s art challenge was “Dream World”. I’d probably scare people if I tried to draw the dreams I actually remember, either with my accuracy of the nightmarish ones, or with my terrible luck with proportions needed for the other ones. I’ve had some really strange and crazy dreams in my lifetime!

One day, I was feeling bleh…blah…meh…and decided to just draw. I just wanted to do something productive that made me smile. So I drew retro martians and a peacock’s head and a huge peacock feather. I put the pencil drawing away and never really had any intention of doing anything else with it. Ha! Life has it’s little curve balls, doesn’t it? It fit today’s challenge so I inked over the pencil lines, added the teapot, drops and splash, the small feathers, and the stars. I colored it in with soft chalk pastels. It’s been a very long time since I worked with pastels and it was really great to use them again. In the photo edit, I used Pixlr Express to crop it, added a frame that made it look like an old picture, and then put a gritty retro poster overlay over that. It muted the colors a bit but I like the misty sort of dreamy feel it gave off as a photo. I’m keeping it like that. And if you like it, too, you can stop by my deviantART account to purchase a print. Or download a digital copy for your personal use only. I try to offer as many of my photos and artworks as digital downloads as I can because I know the economy sucks. It might be like shooting myself in the foot. Who knows? Anyway, on with the photo!

Current Project Done For Now

I finished the pencil doodle I started this morning. I have to say, I needed to take a few breaks to rest my hand! I haven’t done this much detail work since high school, many moons ago. But I’m truly happy with the result of my labor. I may ink it in and add a little color later but I’m done for today. I used my cell to snap this shot and edited it with Pixlr Express. I uploaded a similar photo to my deviantART account that I edited in Gimp. I’ll be linking this photo when I get back to my computer. I hope you enjoy the picture!
